LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME
Here you will get aquainted with those poor animals who desperately are looking for the loving and caring home they deserve after a hard and insecure life of hardship on the streets on Crete. Contact us if you feel the wish to stop their misery and welcome them at your home letting them be a part of your life.
We know that searching for homes and adoption is not the sustainable solution to the miserable situation for the animals here on site and it is not our central work. We believe in consequent organized sterilization programs in combination with controlled microchip registration of all dogs and cats as key to a brighter future. However, as animal lovers fighting against windmills we also cannot close our eyes to the current fate and daily misery of the strays right now longing for a safe and loving place.
So we try our best to help them to find that special place of care and love to stay forever.
Here you find local dogs and cats looking for a permanent home. Most of them are temporaly fostered while others still live on the street. They only have in common that their future and fate is uncertain. It is up to you to change this.
We have a very strong and special warmhearted binding to our 7 „Kivo Dogs“ – The Magnificent 7
To cut a long story short. After the sudden unprepared collaps of the local Nerokouro Dog Shelter (Kivo tou Noe – Noah’s Ark) at Chania in summer 2021 we came together with friends and volunteers to save the about 70 remaining left dogs there and to find homes for them. Otherwise they might have been thrown into the streets or even worse. We kept the shelter running and trained the dogs.
When the shelter was finally shut down by the Municipality in April 2022 at the deadline still 7 dogs were there. Not beeing familiar with human beeings too shy and too frightened they were just not ready for adoption. We kept our promise that not one of those dogs would end up in the streets. We organized Foster Places and Dog Behaviour Training and since then they made incredible progress.
We constantly need donations to continue our support for them but much much more do they need a permanent home!
The Municipality of Chania on Crete is legally responsible in all belongings for all of the stray animals here. Even not being able to provide a Public shelter. Instead of working on sustainable solutions they rather administer the catastrophic situation of the stray animals day by day.
There is although an agreement for local puppies and kittens until the age of 5 months being officially reported to the Municipality that in case of godparenthood or adoption they will pay for some expenses such as food and medical examination and treatment including vaccinations. Sterilization also if appropiate and in schedule.
The Animal Welfare Associations should share the public posts of the Municipality to do their part. We will do so knowing that the vast majority of their job is still done by the Associations and Volunteers. But now there is a chance that at least some of the costs are covered.
